How Face Exercises Work

Muscles are fibrous masses of tissue that are built of protein. Exercising muscles promotes the thickening and strengthening of muscle fibers. To strengthen a muscle, there must be enough protein in the diet to ensure muscle growth. The goal of exercise is to make the muscle move repeatedly until it tires and the tissue breaks down; after this point rest is essential so that the tissue can regenerate and grow bigger. The more the muscle contracts, the more it grows.
With the right balance of exercise and rest, the muscle adapts to the demands placed on it by growing bigger and stronger. Working a muscle to a heightened percentage of its capacity over a relatively short time will increase its size, strength and ability to contract. By isolating various muscles in the face and performing a repeated range of movements, the muscles are strengthened, regenerated and enlarged.

The Birth Of The Sag

Facial muscles are terribly underused. As a result, most people have weak muscles, which invariably sag. And when the muscles sag, the skin attached to them also sags. In fact, slack facial muscles are one of the main causes of sagging and drooping that most of us eventually experience.
Sagging is a result of the inevitable reduction in collagen and elastin – the skin’s connective fibers - as we age. These fibers give skin elasticity and suppleness, and there’s no way to restore these substances. Shrinkage of diminished subcutaneous fat, or fat under the skin, also contributes to sagging. Fat reserves under the skin grow smaller with age, and this can partially account for that mid-life “gaunt” look that hollows out an aging face.
Sagging produces under eye bags and loose folds of skin on the upper eyelids. Lack of exercise makes muscle tissue thin and wasted. Working isolated muscles with face exercises helps restore muscle tissue’s elasticity and tone, making it plump and renewing strength. Like biceps, pectorals or abdominal muscles, facial muscles must be exercised in order to be firm, fit and strong.
